The group was traveling along the River between the Lindsey Bridge and Water Street access points when the tree broke loose and fell after 2:30 p.m., said Madison Police Chief Perry Webster.
A number of factors could have contributed to the accident, including soil saturation, he said. "With the storms we've been having these past few days, it was just a matter of nature and it just gave way," Webster said. The mutual aid agreement between the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office and Madison Police Department allows either agency to respond to emergencies at the river, Webster said. He said it's always smart for people tubing to carry a phone in a case or water pack just in case of emergency.
