A flagman was in the roadway to stop the traffic and the train was blowing the horn, said investigator Perry Schellpfeffer, spokesman for Englewood Police.
When she drove around the flagman and onto the tracks, the train hit the car on the passenger side and pushed it north about 50 feet along the tracks. The driver was cited for disregarding a railroad flagman. "She was extremely lucky that she wasn't hurt any worse," said Schellpfeffer. "She doesn't appear to be any type of criminal. She's just a little old lady out there driving." Schellpfeffer says it would be appropriate to revisit this woman's competency for driving, as allowed by Colorado law. But he wouldn't want to see a new law that sets a firm age limit for keeping a driver's license. "People are at different competency levels at different ages," he said. The incident occurred in the 1900 block of West Dartmouth Avenue about 10:57 a.m., according to Perry Schellpfeffer, an investigator for the Englewood Police Department.
Schellpfeffer said the train was approaching the crossing at 5 mph, blowing its horn and the flagman was actually on foot at the crossing warning motorists of the approaching train. The crossing does not have gates that lower and block motorists from crossing the tracks, but there are two signs marking the crossing, he said. The car, a Toyota Camry, was demolished, said Schellpfeffer, but the driver sustained only minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Schellpfeffer said the woman will be charged with "failure to yield right of way to a flagman," a traffic offense.
