Iraqi Christians Under Threat as Never Before BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Sister Beninia Hermes Shoukwana, a Christian nun and headmistress of the public school near Palestine Street, has been running the white brick Hebtikar School for more than 30 years.These days, she says, are the worst of times, and she's unable to hide her distress over the fate of her country and fellow Christians, most of them Chaldeans, members of the Nestorian sect who converted to Catholicism in the 16th century.

Peggy Polk - Vatican CityPeggy Polk began writing about the Vatican for UPI during the papacy of Paul VI.After assignments in Moscow, Madrid and Washington, she returned to Rome in 1983 as UPI's manager for Italy and accompanied the pope on a number of trips during the 1980s.She later worked for the United Nations and covered Rome and the Vatican for the Chicago Tribune and Voice of America.She joined RNS in 1998 and also contributes to The Tablet.Polk received degrees from Radcliffe College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and was a professional journalism fellow at Stanford University.
