Peggy Aamodt My hero, Peggy Aamodt, represents a true survivor, but you won't find her resting on her past accomplishments. She is too busy being a successful business owner, doting grandmother, and cancer survivor.Despite her many achievements, Peggy is a humble, gracious person.I came to know her as a friend of her youngest son. From our first meeting, it was evident that I had stumbled across a kind person who welcomed all strangers.Peggy has a special ability to relate to all children, wether it be her one year old grandson, or nearly grown teenagers.I often turn to her for advice, and she always responds with wisdom and honesty.I have since become a faithful family friend, drawn in by the ambition, courage, and charm of the family lead by such a remarkable woman. (It is no surprise that Peggy was voted Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants when she participated in the 1968 Miss Farbanks pageant.)Until six months ago, Peggy was the owner of an accredited child care center called 'Turtle Soup,' affectionately named for her fondness of sea creatures and children. An accredited child care center differs greatly from that of a liscenced day care center, in the degree of quality and amount of care provided in the program. Peggy is a graduate of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and she holds B.A. degrees in psychology and English and a teaching certificate. While writing a thesis for her English degree, Peggy charted unfamiliar territory by choosing to research how to effectively discipline 3-5 year old children in small group settings. Her skeptical professor was finally convinced by her determination. Her efforts paid off, and after an arduous cycle of editing and revising, Peggy was able to complete her thesis. This not only secured her a passing grade, but afforded her the opportunity to put the research to use and help countless day care providers and parents through seminars and workshops she hosted.Peggy later took a perminant substituting job in the remote Alaskan Village of Barrow, while completing her student teaching with High School children. After the birth of her two sons, Peggy and her family returned to Anchorage. She realized that she wanted to spend every possible moment with her children, and at the advice of a friend she decided to provide day care to a small group of children.Initially Peggy has committed to only one year of day care service, but after only four months she had applied to be a liscensed day care provider. In her fifteen years as a day care provider, Peggy has served on the Board of Directors for Alaskan Child Care Connection, has been nationally recognized for her programs, and frequently lends her services to mentor fellow child care providers.Recently in February of 2001, Peggy accepted a position with the Municipality of Anchorage to raise awarness by educating child care providers on the safety and educational standards for young children.Peggy enjoys going to work every day, and is part of a dynamic team devoted to insuring the utmost quality of day care services for Anchorage families.Peggy is especially sensitive to the health needs of children. She lost her own mother to breast cancer, and stood risk to developing the disease herself. In 1996 a mammogram revealed the worst.A cancerous lump had formed and required surgery to remove.Doctors performed a masectomy to ensure the cancer was completely removed from the body. She is approaching her five year anniversary for being cancer-free.Peggy participates in the Annual Anchorage Women's Run which raised funds for breast cancer awareness and celebrates life. There are many types of teachers in this world.School teachers, mentors, parents, and especially friends.Peggy Aamodt fits each of these titles and surpasses the expectations in every case. She has taught me that the key to education is to learn for life, to constantly seek knowledge and new ideas. She promotes a legacy of kindness and compassion in all she does.
