ALP Program Director: Ms. Pauline Sato (contract position)
Born and raised in Hawai`i, Pauline Sato has always had a passion for protecting Hawaii's environment. For more than 25 years, she has worked with various organizations such as the Bishop Museum, The Nature Conservancy, Malama Hawai`i, and Malama Learning Center in positions incorporating education, community outreach, internships, voyaging, and natural resources conservation.
She writes, "My foundation in environmental education, particularly about Hawaii's environment, allows me to see the 'big picture' about the issues we face as island people and the solutions we must seek. Although my background is in conservation and I am not an agricultural expert, I see the close connections between agriculture and conservation and strive to build stronger relationships between the two. I have learned so much already from my experiences with Classes XIII and XIV. Donna Ching trained me well and I am elated that she will be rejoining our training team along with Peter Adler. Together, we will set the foundation for an exemplary program."

Pauline Sato is the co-founder of Malama Hawai`i, which is a grassroots hui (association) of more than 70 organizations. This broad-based hui works to integrate mutual concerns for the environment, health, education, and culture of our local worlds. Some of the work these groups have accomplished has been fighting wildfires, protecting endangered species, clearing invasive species (on land and at sea), and organizing community volunteer events for beach cleanups, as well as creating public awareness about forested watersheds and coral reefs. In addition to all this, Ms. Sato was formerly the coordinator of The Nature Conservancy's public awareness and outreach programs in Hawai`i.
After earning a science degree and obtaining her Master's Degree in Education, Ms. Sato has been invaluable in developing environmental education curricula and teacher-training workshops, running student stewardship programs, and helping create the Malama Learning Center. This center helps bring art, science, conservation, and culture together in an effort to foster sustainable living. Ms. Sato has also been a member of the popular sailing vessel Hokule'aand its conservation missions throughout the Pacific region.
