August 2004: Paula Coopwood
The Heart & Soul of a Community Arts Event: For more than 23 years, Paula Coopwood has been an active volunteer for The Austin Fine Arts Festival (formerly Fiesta at Laguna Gloria). With her, she carries the event's history, yet she is most valued for her ability to constantly bring new ideas and energy to the table. What makes her unique is that after 23 years and more than 11,500 volunteer hours, she is still an enthusiastic hands-on volunteer for the arts.Throughout the years, her volunteer efforts have helped raise more than $2 million for the Austin Museum of Art.
In addition to raising funds, Paula's dedication has made The Austin Fine Arts Festival one of the top 5 art festivals in Texas-helping emerging artists to promote their work and expose hundreds of thousands of Central Texans to new artists from around the nation.Paula has served as a committee chairman of almost every festival committee-(there are more than 15 committees in all) and was the Festival Chairman in 1998, 2003, 2004-a record-breaking number. As a festival leader, Paula is often called upon to handle conflict resolution and make the tough decisions that ultimately shape the future of the organization.Paula is known to lead by example-a quality that has earned her the respect and trust of the entire festival volunteer core. She thinks big and she follows through.
While others talk of making a difference or changing the world, Paula Coopwood gets up and does it.In addition to the arts, Paula is also very active in other areas of the community. She is a member of the Travis County Medical Alliance where she was a board member for several terms. She also serves on several committees including; Healthfest and Call a Doctor and was 1995/96 President. In addition, she is a member of The Settlement Home, a residential treatment center and foster home agency for children since 1995.She has also served on several committees at the Aqua Festival of Austin from 1988-1995, as well with the Junior League of Austin from 1991 - 2001.Paula Coopwood's tireless dedication to the community, especially the arts, has been a tremendous difference in the lives of others and is truly worthy of recognition.Thank you, Paula for your outstanding volunteerism!
