Congratulations to Paul C. Schmall
, PE, D.GE, F.ASCE for being selected as the recipient of the Wallace Hayward Baker Award for 2015.
He currently serves as Vice President and Chief Engineer for Moretrench, a nationally recognized company providing a comprehensive range of construction and specialized geotechnical services.
has responsibility for the company's complex groundwater control projects involving dewatering, grouting, ground freezing and artificial recharge for underground construction or tunneling.
has engineered and managed numerous technically complex, groundwater-related and geotechnical projects in the United States and overseas.
In particular, he
is acknowledged as an authority on ground freezing and he
has been instrumental in the design and execution of a number of significant works.
Notable among these are mass freezing to facilitate tunnel jacking for Boston's renowned Central Artery/Tunnel project and perimeter freezing for deep shaft excavation for New York City Water Tunnel No. 3.
has extensive experience with aquifer pumping tests, fouling of dewatering systems, and the forensic investigation and remediation of geotechnical "failures" related to groundwater.
is proactive in advancing the state of the practice by sharing his
experience and expertise with the engineering community through frequent seminar and conference presentations, the publication of technical papers, instruction of several short courses, and by serving on industry committees.
He is a co-author of the third edition of Construction Dewatering and Groundwater Control, published in 2007, and has been appointed Adjunct Professor of Civil Engineering for Manhattan College, a position that he's held since 2009.
Mr. Schmall is a Fellow of ASCE and was among the first Diplomates inducted into the Academy in 2009.
