There has been an uptick in morning meetings for the Freetown Board of Selectmen, but Selectmen Chairman Paul Sadeck recently indicated that these meetings are improving town government. In January, selectmen held only one Monday evening meeting, while three meetings were conducted at 9 a.m. Sadeck insisted that having one evening meeting in a month is not only rare, but the first time it has happened since he joined the board in 2010. He said it happened last month because an issue took place that forced selectmen to reschedule the last Monday meeting of January from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. Since Sadeck joined the board, official morning meetings have started to take place more. Sadeck, who is retired, insisted on joining fellow board members on interviews and others morning engagements. He said in past practice, one select board member would attend a meeting during the day. Sadeck took issue with this practice, as he said there we never any minutes or recordings of any of the meetings. Sadeck requested to attend daytime meetings with a designated fellow selectmen.

Selectman Lee Baumgartner, who was elected last year and is also retired, can often join Sadeck at these morning meetings. Selectwoman Lisa Pacheco, who works in the area, also attends many of the meetings. With these daytime meetings featuring more than one selectman, they are accompanied by minutes, as well as video and audio files. Sadeck said the video files are available on the town web site and audio files will become available soon. "We have opened up government in Freetown to make it more transparent," Sadeck said. He said sometimes the board has no choice but to meet with certain people during the day.

Sadeck touted a number of accomplishments for the select board over his past three years in office, including an improved bond rating and a more accurate accounting system. Spending has been under control within town departments, which this year lead to a decrease in taxes for the first time in years. He thanked his fellow select board members and town department heads for the continued success. He also noted how the schools have been funded over net school spending and how senior programs such as the brown bag program continue to thrive. If re-elected, he noted that he will strive to help the board stimulate more business growth in town and, among many other goals, work to improve town infrastructure such as the town police station building. Sadeck once worked as the town treasurer for 19 years and as a reserve police officer for 35 years. "I have lived here for 40 years and would not live anywhere else," he said. "I assure you that I will work as hard as ever for the community." Former Selectwoman Jean Fox, who was ousted last year by current Selectman Lee Baumgartner, wrote an email to reporters saying that she is considering a run against Sadeck. Reached this week, she said she is not sure if she will run and has not yet taken out nomination papers.
