Surviving are six sons, Michael E., married to Marion Joyce, Peter A. and Christopher E., all of Lancster, Daniel T., married to Kathleen Joyce of Downingtown, Philip M., married to Becky Joyce of Exton, and Paul J. of Media.
...Paul J. Rowan, M.D. Paul J. Rowan, M.D. of Lancaster, PA and Naples, FL died on March 5, 2004 at the Chateau at Moorings Park, a Naples nursing facility, of complications related to a stroke he suffered in 2000 during heart surgery.
Born in Altoona, PA on September 18, 1920 to the late William Peter and Florence Myers Rowan, he
graduated from Franklin and Marshall College
in 1942 with a B.S. in chemistry.He
was preceded in death by his
wife of 53 years, Marian Frances Simpson of Lancaster, whom he
met during his
undergraduate years at F & M. From 1943 to 1945 he
served in the U.S. Army's medical training unit.After completing studies at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1945, he began a one-year internship at Philadelphia General Hospital.His surgical residency was served at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lancaster from 1946 though 1949, when he was appointed chief resident.He was awarded an Emory University Fellowship in surgery which was served at Bay Pines, Florida V.A. Hospital from 1949 to 1951.
In 1951, he
returned to Lancaster where he
practiced general surgery until his
retirement in 1986.He was a member of the surgical staff of St. Joseph's Hospital from 1951 through 1986 and served as chairman of the hospital's department of surgery from 1975 to 1980.He supervised the surgical residence program at St. Joseph's from 1952 through 1962.
In 1957 he
was appointed to the hospital's tissue committee, an internal peer review board, which he
later chaired.He was a member of the Columbia Hospital surgical staff beginning in 1951 and chairman of the department of surgery from 1951 to 1980.He was also a member of the consulting staffs of the Lancaster General and Ephrata Community Hospitals. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons and a member of the Lancaster City and County Medical Society, the Pennsylvania State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association.He
was a parishioner at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Lancaster and St. William's Church
in Naples, where he
also sang in the choir.He was a member of the Hamilton Club in Lancaster and the Faculty Club of the University of Pennsylvania. He
is survived by eight daughters and three sons: Marian West and her
husband, Soren, and Claire DiSebastian and her
husband, Richard, of Lancaster; Margaret Diaz-Cruz and her
husband, Mario, of New York, NY; Mary Klein, and her
husband, Daniel, and Alice O'Brien and her
husband, Kevin, of Wilmington, DE; Julia Monaco and her
husband, Thomas, of Havertown, PA: Agnes Scholl and her
husband, Joseph, of Woolwich, NJ; Anne Rowan of Woodbury, NJ; Paul J. Rowan, Jr.
wife, Wendy, of Walnut Creek, CA; Andrew M. Rowan and his
wife, Coleen, of Sinking Spring, PA; and Shawn P. Rowan and his
wife, Claire, of Glendale, MO.He
is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by his
brothers, William and Donald, and is survived by his
brother, Charles, of Hemet, CA, and his
sisters, Lois Plummer of Tucson, AR and Lucille Frigon of Temecula, CA.His
second wife, Ann Seifert Stewart Kamp Rowan of Naples
and Yarmouthport, MA, who he
married in 1999, also survives.
