Father Paul J. Maher, S.J.
a retreat director and spiritual director who served in the archdiocese and in Africa, died July 12 at Murray-Weigel Hall, the Jesuit infirmary in the Bronx.He
was 71.He was assistant to the superior of the Jesuits' Nigeria-Ghana Region and formation director in Lagos, Nigeria, 1998-2003, and director of the Jesuit retreat center in Benin City, Nigeria, 1988-1998.He
was superior of Mount Manresa Retreat House on Staten Island, 1981-1987, and retreat director at the former Gonzaga Retreat House
in Monroe, 1967-1968.He also served as a retreat director and superior of St. Ignatius Retreat House in Manhasset.
Since 2003 he
had directed retreats while residing in Loyola Hall at Fordham University
.Born in Queens, he entered the Jesuits in 1952 at St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepsie, and professed vows in 1954.He
studied there and at Loyola Seminary
in Shrub Oak and Woodstock College
in Maryland, and was ordained in 1964 at Fordham University Chapel
.He earned a doctorate in theology from The Catholic University of America in 1971.
