The program now known as Grief Watch, had its beginning in the pioneering work with grieving parents undertaken by Pat Schwiebert, RN, and Dr. Paul Kirk, MD at the Oregon Health Sciences University in the late 1970s.
Dr. Kirk, Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at OHSU, had begun specializing in the care of pregnant mothers who had experienced the loss of an infant, through miscarriage or complications during the birthing process or shortly thereafter. Ms. Schwiebert, working as a childbirth instructor, but with experience as a hospice nurse, shared Dr. Kirk's interest in helping parents who were grieving the loss of their infant children.
But Dr. E. Paul Kirk , professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Oregon Health & Science University , also said he didn't believe the cancer was present or could have been detected at that point.
Doctors have to take the responsibility for prioritizing health care and figuring out when such tests are warranted , Kirk said. The health care system would collapse if doctors ordered a CT scan every time a patient came in complaining of abdominal pain , he said.
Hoover's treatment is well within the standard of care , Kirk said.I don't think ovarian cancer was diagnosable earlier..
Testimony in the case continues today.Closing arguments before the five-man , seven-woman jury are expected Wednesday or Thursday.
