Dr. Paul Farrier, director of health services at Virginia Tech's Schiffert Health Center, said his staff is working a little harder than normal this exam season because of the recent influenza outbreak.Farrier said there is a general belief among many in medicine that people are more susceptible to sickness during times of high stress. Farrier said he would give the same advice to students as he would to anyone trying to avoid contracting the flu: Wash your hands frequently and then keep them away from your face, nose and mouth; drink plenty of nonalcoholic fluids; and get plenty of rest. The latter, Farrier said, is the always the challenge for students this week. Click here for today's headlines.Click here for the past seven day's headlines.

SHC is currently undergoing many improvements, with services for both in-house renovations and updates, including a modern X-ray machine, a conversion from film to digital, said Paul Farrier, associate director of SHC.Throughout last year's academic year, Farrier served as the interim director and the associate director for SHC."We are improving our services both quantitatively and qualitatively," he said.As time develops, Charoensiri plans to provide leadership and a visual direction for SHC, their operations and the students at Tech."By using campus surveys, I am very interested in what the students have to say and the problems that they are most concerned with," she said. Before devising new initiatives or plans, Charoensiri hopes to find out where the major issues and problems are prior to making any new changes.Staff members want to know the student population's input and opinions on the health center's success, Farrier said."Our biggest problem is keeping up with the university," he said.
