Paul Connolly, S-A's vice president of network architecture, said the time was right for S-A to re-enter the data market with a line of CMTS products as cable operators continue to move beyond legacy equipment and build out their networks for high-speed data and other new services.Cable operators were nudging S-A to incorporate new data products into the company's overall network design, Connolly said.
He forecasted that PBC's custom-built silicon would help S-A differentiate itself from a highly-competitive CMTS field that includes Motorola Broadband Communications Sector, ADC Telecommunications and Arris Group Inc., among others.

Heading up S-A's new Emerging Businesses unit is Paul Connolly, who serves as its vice president and general manager.S-A said the aim of the division is to help MSOs offer data, voice and video services to business customers through services that touch sales, marketing and launch support.
S-A said the time is ripe for it to enter the commercial-class broadband sector."Our research shows that 80 percent of the business datacom market can be adequately served by traditional dial-up, ISDN, DSL or cable modem service -- but that market represents only about 20 percent of the dollars spent on business data connectivity," Connolly said, in a statement."We have the products, the systems, the know-how -- and now the organization to give the cable operator a chance to offer a wide range of voice and data connectivity services on their cable networks, and the opportunity to capture a greater share of that 80 percent revenue figure," he added.
