Paul Burgess, Pastor
Paul Burgess, Pastor
A Johnston County native, Paul
has long known of the special town down I-95 called "Benson."
Paul was born and raised just up the road in Smithfield; there, he attended First Baptist Church, a fellowship that gave him a strong foundation through its remarkable witness of what loving God and loving others is really about.
During his years at First Baptist, Paul was encouraged to consider ministry as a vocation, and while pursuing his undergraduate degree at UNC-Chapel Hill, God affirmed that church ministry was, indeed, a life to which he had been called.
Hence, upon graduation, Paul enrolled at Campbell University Divinity School, where he forged valuable relationships and deepened his understanding of what a minister of Christ should do and be.
Paul left Campbell with a Masters in Divinity with Languages, then jumped right into the ministerial waters by serving as the Interim Pastor of Sharon Baptist Church in Smithfield.
The experience he gained at Sharon prepared Paul for his first full-time ministerial role, that of Associate Pastor for Students and Outreach at First Baptist Church in Clayton, NC.
After two years of growth with a tremendous youth group and loving church, Paul received a call to come to Benson and serve as Pastor; he humbly accepted and began his journey with us in December, 2013.
and Eliza met as middle schoolers on a church mission trip in 1998; after remaining friends for several years, something deeper eventually blossomed, and the blessed result was a wedding in 2008.
Before a call was issued, they shared with the Pastoral Search Committee that they wouldn't want to serve at a church that they wouldn't attend if Paul wasn't on staff.
The fact that they have settled and are happy here is a testament to the Spirit present within this faith community, a Spirit that makes the Burgess' comfortable saying that, if Paul weren't a minister, they'd still be members; if he weren't behind the pulpit, they'd still be in a pew.
