Big Guys Eatin' the Little Ones in Today's After-Death Industry

Paul Bartholomew, vice president and finance controller of the Hamilton Group, disagrees."We purchase funeral homes and operate them," he said."We enlarge our company while serving the public."Bartholomew said conglomerate intervention provides benefits to communities and funeral homes. "We assist communities while keeping costs stable. We understand it's important for people to have a secure place to help them deal with business in unpleasant times," Bartholomew said."So we keep the firm's tradition going while providing financial stability." "Take an owner who's run a home 30 or 40 years," Bartholomew said."Say he doesn't have anyone to follow his footsteps. It's time for him to retire and he needs to pass it on to someone."According to Bartholomew, in situations like these, Hamilton will purchase the funeral home."However," he added, "we want the old owners to continue working. We want to keep the firm going in its original tradition."For this reason, Hamilton does not change the name of the funeral home or replace the workers with ones of its own."In fact," Bartholomew said,"many people will choose to continue working three to five years after they sell.Rather than placing top priority on themselves, Bartholomew says Hamilton treats ex-owners as entrepreneurs."They work with us to develop budgets.I visit the funeral homes along with our Vice President of Operations, and we make accounts of damage and disrepair," he said."For example, Hamilton recently bought a home in Monetbello that needed some fixing up, so we wrote them a check for $125,000.We assist and manage these funeral homes, but they still run their own businesses. If they've been doing it 30 or 40 years, they can do it much better than we can." Bartholomew also said Hamilton never buys companies against their will. These negative feelings perplex Bartholomew."60 Minutes is on our case about taking advantage of people," he said."It's easy to go find some schlock doing that, but you couldn't stay in business if you were only out to screw people.I recently faced a woman struggling to provide a funeral for her young son," he said."I was able to give her a free cemetery plot."Bartholomew said these humanitarian deeds occur two or three times a year in practically every funeral home."This is what you don't see in the press," he said.
