Patti Matty exudes energy, and she needs it to fulfill her role as President of the Pittsburgh CLO Guild. She works tirelessly to energize and organize this auxiliary of approximately 185 volunteers who promote the efforts of Pittsburgh CLO.These dedicated individuals host the annual outstanding Pink Frolic Ball, support CLO's extensive Education and Outreach programs, purchase season subscriptions and encourage others to attend performances. It takes a true theater-lover to lead this high-energy group!
Patti was introduced to the CLO Guild in 1964 by a friend who knew of her passion for musical theater. It was easy for her to become absorbed in the CLO.As a child, she remembered her mother and father going to the Nixon to enjoy a live performance or to see a movie every Saturday night. She recalls waiting up for them to come home to hear all about their evening - especially the musicals.
Patti is a firm believer that "we have to introduce young people at an early age and expose them to musical theater."She remembers going with her family to her first musical at the Nixon Theater on Liberty Avenue.Since then, Patti has become an avid theater patron. She has seen Pittsburgh CLO perform at every venue it has called "home" including Pitt Stadium, the Melody Tent, the Civic Arena, Heinz Hall and now the Benedum Center.
There is no doubt that Patti is hooked on the CLO.She can't wait to see The Music Man this summer. She remembers seeing Robert Preston in the lead role in New York City in the 1950's."How can you not love a musical filled with songs as wonderful as the perky "76 Trombones" or as hopeful and tender as "Goodnight My Someone."
While Patti prefers "happily ever after musicals," her all-time favorite show is Les Miserables, not yet staged by Pittsburgh CLO.One of her favorite CLO productions is La Cage aux Folles, mounted in 1985 and again in 1997.However, Patti says she is hard pressed to single out any one favorite because every CLO musical has a new and fresh perspective."One can see the same musical again and again, but always with a different interpretation. And that is truly exciting."
The ideal summer season for Patti includes "a new musical, an older seldom produced musical and a musical for children."In summer 2003, that recipe included Thoroughly Modern Millie, She Loves Me and Annie. This year Patti and CLO audiences can look forward to Dreamgirls, Me and My Girl and The Music Man.
Not only are Patti and her husband, Paul, donors to the CLO, but they also personally hold ten Season Subscriptions!!!
Even with all those tickets, Patti often calls the CLO for additional seats to share with friends and family including "the young ones.""We have had four generations of our family supporting the Pittsburgh CLO," she says proudly.
