Patrick J. Sloyan, journalist and author, will speak on"The Politics of Deception"on June 21st 2016 at the Old Lyme Country Club, 40 McCurdy Road, Old Lyme. Reception begins at 5:30 p.m.; presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. Patrick J Sloyan has covered national and international affairs since 1960. He has been awarded journalism's most distinguished prizes for domestic and foreign reporting, including the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for his 1990 coverage of Desert Storm, the Persian Gulf War and its aftermath, the George Polk Award for War Reporting, the Raymond Clapper Award for investigative reporting (revelations of the windfall payments by Clinton Administration to defense contractors), and the Deadline Writing prize for his coverage of the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. Also, he was a member of a Newsday team that won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Reporting on the crash of TWA 800 off the coast of Long Island. As a foreign correspondent based in London, he covered Europe, the Mideast during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, the British invasion of the Falkland Islands, and the transformation of the Soviet Union during the rise of Mikhail Gorbachev. In addition to daily journalism, he has written extensively for a variety of publications including Rolling Stone, the New Republic, the Nation, the Washington Monthly, American Journalism Review, the Washington Post Outlook and the London Guardian.

Patrick Sloyan of the US publication Newsday had also written about the mass slaughter of Iraqi soldiers in trenches:
"What you saw was a bunch of buried trenches with peoples' arms and things sticking out of them. . . ." [General Norman] Schwarzkopf's staff has privately estimated that, from air and ground attacks, between 50,000 and 75,000 Iraqis were killed in their trenches. . . . PATRICK J. SLOYAN
Patrick J. Sloyan has covered national and international affairs since 1960. He has received two Pulitzer Prizes including one for international reporting for an investigative series on the 1992 Gulf War. The former Washington bureau chief of Newsday, Sloyan also won the George Polk Award for war reporting.
