Keith Higgens' Black Pearl Sings! earned its exclamation point not only song by song, but also story by story, layered and contrasted by the two-person cast under the sound direction of Virginia Stage Company director Patrick Mullins.

'It's A Green and Gold World' - VSC & NSU Put New Spin On Old Classic - The New Journal and Guide

"Well, this version is mostly different because it is made by us - right here in Norfolk," said Patrick Mullins, co-director of the show and associate producer of the Virginia Stage Co.
This partnership has been cultivated over the last two years, Patrick Mullins and others at the stage company came to see a couple of our shows and were impressed with the level of professionalism they saw on our stage and thought it might be an opportunity to partner." Or as Mullins said of the new local partnership, "It makes me think of what they say of tennis - 'You only get better by playing people better than you are.' I believe that is also true of being onstage - whether you are acting or singing or dancing. Mullins said, "Theatre is ultimately a communal activity. Mullins said, "By working together VSC gets to contribute to the training of some of the best young actors in the country and NSU students get to be immersed in a professional environment and play with high caliber talent onstage. By working together - we get to do backstage what the audience is doing on the other side of the curtain - work together to create great art, have a good time, and celebrate the gifts of this beautiful region that we all live in." Mullins and Stockard said the partnership is making both theatrical groups stronger and wiser. "I'm thrilled to be able to work on 'The Wiz' with him and his students at this higher level of partnership," Mullins said.

A Review: A Wonderful Wiz - The New Journal and Guide

thenewjournalandguide.com [cached]

Staged at the historic Wells Theater and co-directed by the VSC's Patrick Mullins and NSU's Anthony Stockard, this "Wiz" is decidedly afro-centric, sweetly laden with subtle African and African-American themes, manifested in scenic designs, choreography, and make-up.
Mullins and Stockard cast against type by using Indya Jackson in a traditionally male role.
