Brief Biography - Patrick Beullens
Dr ir. Patrick Beullens joined the School of Mathematics and School of Management at the University of Southampton in September 2011, where he lectures in the area of OR/MS, and contributes in the research of CORMSIS and the LANCS Initiative.
Dr Beullens' main research approach is applied and issue-oriented. His current research interests include the optimisation of and collaboration in supply chains of independent actors, and to understand how logistics (inventories, transportation, production) as well as contracts (payment structure, service levels, penalties, etc) build relationships between the profit functions of these companies through costs and revenues. This applies to forward supply chains (consumables), reverse logistics (recycling), closed-loop supply chains (repair and reuse of e.g. spare parts), and horizontal collaboration (e.g. pooling arrangements of beds in hospitals).
His current interests also include the system-wide optimisation of the cost-service trade-off across large numbers of SKUs (stock-keeping units), pre- and descriptive models of cooperative games, the parameter setting problem of meta-heuristics, and the benefits of asynchronous parallelisation of search algorithms.
At the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U. Leuven, Belgium), Dr Beullens obtained his MSc in chemical engineering in 1993, his Master of engineering in industrial management in 1994, and PhD (greatest distinction) in 2001 on location, process selection and vehicle routing models for reverse logistics.
During his career, Dr Beullens has been actively involved in several projects directly funded by industry in the areas of logistics and supply chain optimisation. He has been a researcher in several European Projects in the area of recycling, reuse, and reverse logistics (REVLOG, RELOOP, MABUSE). He was principal investigator for the University of Portsmouth for: the EU project LOGMAN (2009-2011), on the impact of logistics and manufacturing trends on carbon footprints; the EU project SEABILLA (2010-2011), on sea border surveillance by UAVs; the SEEDA project CADRE (2008-2009), on dynamic vehicle routing; and IMAS (2009-2010), an inventory optimisation project for the Ministry of Defence.
Dr Beullens has published in a variety of OR/MS journals, including Operations Research, Production and Operations Management, European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of the Operational Research Society, International Journal of Production Research, International Transactions in Operational Research, Industrial Engineering & Management Systems, ScienceAsia Journal, and International Journal of Operations Research. From 2001 to 2005, he was co-editor of the journal Handboek Reverse Logistics (Kluwer/tenHagenStam, NL). Since 2011, he is Associate Editor for the International Journal of Systems Science.
