"To do 3.0 the right way, we need to provide interoperability and we need to work with all vendors to ensure provisioning is uniform," Patricia Steadman, CEO of Incognito told CSI.Steadman pointed to the example of PacketCable, where provisioning ended up different between vendors even after specification because proprietary implementations persisted."What we're trying to do is work with the hardware vendors to ensure provisioning is done the same way from a protocol perspective. We're trying to bring this in the beginning, rather than at the end," she said.
The need for this initiative has resulted from the fact that while all vendors are focused on ensuring that hardware conforms to a DOCSIS 3.0 specification, they don't necessarily test the provisioning in the same manner, according to Steadman. From a provisioning perspective, in fact, Steadman notes that vendors don't have to go through CableLabs certification at all, because although the group has set the standards for the provisioning, it doesn't certify it in the same way as hardware.
Steadman expects this programme to speed deployments because the configuration and allocation for DHCPv6 auto-configuration and IPv6 addressing is fundamentally different from previous provisioning and protocols.
