Patricia Okker - Senior Associate Provost - University of Missouri - Columbia

www.press-citizen.com

Patricia Okker is a professor of English at the University of Missouri, where she chaired the Department of English from 2005 to 2011 and currently serves as faculty fellow in the Office of the Provost.
Her public presentation followed the theme and format required of the finalists: speak on the value of a liberal arts education, then take questions from the audience collected and delivered by members of the search committee. But Okker was the only one of the candidates to lighten the atmosphere by occasionally getting laughter through her responses. She paused, considered the questions, tried to understand, admitted that there are things about UI she would need to know in order to answer more fully, and emphasized her desire to work with faculty and staff across departments and colleges both. A refreshing approach.

Patricia Okker is a tenured professor of English and faculty fellow in the Office of the Provost at the University of Missouri. In leading the department, she worked with staff and faculty to increase student participation in intensive research and creative experiences; fostered the development of several faculty-led study abroad programs; and advanced numerous academic partnerships within the college and across campus. An open forum will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in room W290 of the Chemistry Building with a reception to follow at 5 p.m. She has a bachelor's degree from Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, a master's degree from the University of Georgia and a doctorate from the University of Illinois.

In presenting the award, University of Missouri English department Chairwoman Patricia Okker touted the importance of rhetoric and composition in any person's arsenal of skills, from scientist to novelist, but even more important in my own perspective is the value of writing as a peerless learning tool.
