Pat recalls his Strauch grandparents as not only community minded but also lots of fun.He remembers the time his Grandpa Strauch dyed his beard green in honor of St. Patrick's Day.Notwithstanding his penchant for the unusual, his grandfather was a stalwart member of Mesa's early business community.
His grandmother, Mary Strauch, served as a member of the Mesa Public Library Board for many years and helped organize Mesa's chapter of the League of Women Voters. One old timer remarked that she would have made a wonderful governor but that the state be not quite ready for a female governor in those days. She was an avid supporter of the Hon. John Rhodes as he began his political career.
Pat's paternal grandparents arrived in Arizona about 1924.His granddad worked for the Santa Fe railroad all along the Arizona and New Mexico line - from Gallup to Winslow and Ash Fork.Pat's Dad grew up in all of the Santa Fe towns. In Ash Fork, it was his Dad's job, as a little boy, to turn off the town's one street light before he went to bed.Nonetheless, Pat's Dad became Arizona's first concertmaster in its first all state orchestra and played on CBS radio while at the San Francisco World's Fair.
Pat's Mom grew up in Mesa when it was really a small town. She remembers the famous snowstorm in the 30s when the snow stuck on the ground.there be a picture of the snow at the El Charro restaurant in downtown Mesa.

Pat's family moved to Tucson to open another Strauchs' store, and Pat graduated from Rincon High School in 1969.He briefly attended Antioch College where he met his wife, Rory. After marriage, they spent two years teaching at a school in Culver City, California. They returned to Mesa to join the family business and Pat became general manager for the stores.
When Pat and Rory settled in Mesa, Pat joined the Rotary Club and the Hohokams and began his life of service on community boards of directors.Their son Matt was born in 1976 and daughter Sada in 1979.When she was born the midwife was late, and I delivered Sada.We had planned on a home birth but not a Daddy birth, Pat recalled.
Pat said, We lived on Pasadena Street where we raised chickens, goats, rabbits and had a horse for the kids to ride.We had a large garden and acquired a collection of other critters. It was fun living on an acre in Mesa, just down the hill from Hohokam Park. Matt and Sada are both graduates of Westwood High School and were active in Temple Beth Sholom where Rory also served as president of the congregation..
In 1986, Pat decided he had better finish his education if he was to be prepared for a life of public service which was his ambition. He started back to school full time in 1990.He worked as a law clerk and served as a member of the Mesa City Council during this time.In 1992, he was awarded a scholarship from USA Today - honored as one of 20 of the newspaper's Academic All-American First Team.
In addition, in 1991, Pat was granted a scholarship from the nonpartisan Truman Foundation, an endowment funded by the U.S. Congress as a living memorial to President Truman.

Pat began life as a practicing attorney and then accepted a position with the Arizona Attorney General's Office.I had a great experience at the Attorney General's, but I knew that I wanted to be in Mesa, Pat explained.I accepted the position of Executive Director of Mesa Community Action Network, a private, non-profit agency and practice law, too.The agency does good work in the community, and i be proud to be a part of it..
Pat and Rory own Strauchs' now, too - proud of its historical place in the development of the business world in Mesa.Rory, after 12 years with the Scottsdale Prevention Institute providing counseling services to the Scottsdale schools, has recently accepted a position as executive director of the Arizona branch of the National Conference for Community and Justice. Both Pat and Rory stay busy with service to their community.
