With elements of the new game drawing on the tradition of ground hurling in the GAA, Pat Daly, director of Gaelic Games at Croke Park, has outlined his hopes that a return to this aspect of the game, in combination with the sport of shinty, will help broaden the appeal of the sports beyond their traditional Gaelic heartlands. Pat Daly, The GAA's director of games development, told the Irish Times that the proposal had not been mentioned to Croke Park.
"The involvement of an indigenous Australian team has been under consideration in the context of a cultural event, which the GAA are looking at holding in Sydney. The whole concept of international rules is very much rooted in sporting culture and heritage and recognising indigenous players would obviously be in keeping with that," he said.
