Former University of Nebraska at Omaha football coach Pat Behrns has been found guilty after authorities in Council Bluffs arrested him in July on suspicion of soliciting prostitution.
On Monday, he filed an Alford plea, which means that Behrns, 63, is not admitting to the act, only that he believes that prosecutors could prove the charge.
Behrns also has agreed to a deferred judgment, which would remove the conviction from his record if he follows the terms set for probation. He has not yet been sentenced.
Behrns and nine others, including four Omaha women, were arrested July 23 in Council Bluffs as part of a prostitution sting in which initial contacts were made over the Internet. The operation was conducted by local and federal authorities.
Behrns was head coach of the Mavericks from 1994 through the program's dismantling in March 2011, as UNO prepared to join the NCAA's Division I ranks.
Soliciting prostitution in Iowa is an aggravated misdemeanor, punishable by not more than two years in jail.
Behrns and his attorney could not be reached for comment Monday.

63-year-old Pat Behrns pleaded not guilty. His trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 19. Police in Council Bluffs say Behrns was one of several people arrested July 23 during a sting operation at a Pottawattamie County hotel. Behrns was the UNO head coach from 1994 until the century-old program was shut down in March 2011. Before that, Behrns was head coach for the University of North Dakota football team from 1980 to 1985. (Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
