After receiving his undergraduate education at McGill University, he attended medical school at the University of Alberta. He received his MD in 1993, then entered the neurosurgical residency program at the University of Alberta. In the course of this training, he received his PhD in Experimental Surgery in 1999. He completed the residency and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (Neurosurgery) in 2001. From 2001 - 2002, Dr. Parney was an attending neurosurgeon at the University of Alberta. In 2002, he moved to the University of California San Francisco, where he completed a clinical neuro-oncology and post-doctoral research fellowships in the Brain Tumor Research Center. In July 2004, Dr. Parney returned to Calgary to take up a position as an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Clinical Neurosciences and Oncology. In addition to radiosurgery, Dr.Parney's clinical and research interests include surgery for adult brain tumor patients, clinical trial design, and brain tumor immunology and immunotherapy. He is the author of over 20 peer-reviewed publications and 6 book chapters and has received several awards, including the Top Medical Graduate Award (University of Alberta, 1993), the K.G. McKenzie Prize for Basic Neuroscience Research (Canadian Neurosurgical Society, 1997), and the Governor General's Academic Medal for the Top PhD Graduate (University of Alberta, 1999).
