Oscar Leeser leads in El Paso mayoral fundraising
Oscar Leeser is El Paso's next mayor after easily defeating city Rep.
"We have a tough road ahead of us, but we welcome the challenge," Leeser told a crowd of his supporters Saturday at the Camino Real Hotel Downtown, thanking his wife and family for their support. He also thanked Ortega and said he had been "nothing but a gentleman" to him during the campaign.
Voters sent the two candidates into Saturday's runoff election in May, when Leeser narrowly missed winning the race outright.
Leeser said Saturday that he is going to work to unite the community again after several issues -- in particular, the Downtown ballpark and benefits to unmarried partners of city employees -- divided residents.
"People were looking for a change
in the way things are done," said Leeser, 55. "We are going to continue moving forward, but we are going to do things a little different."
Leeser said his first order of business is to talk to City Manager Joyce Wilson, who is negotiating to become the county manager of Lee County in Florida, about the future of that key position.
"If she's leaving, we need to start a search immediately and have a smooth transition," Leeser said.
Leeser said ensuring the ballpark is completed on time and on budget is another priority, and that other projects on the table will be prioritized as soon as he is in office.
Yes, Oscar Leeser is the right man for the job.
Leeser is president of Hyundai of El Paso and campaigned heavily on trust and business experience and said voters wanted a change in leadership. He has said he will donate his mayoral salary of $47,000 a year to charity.
Leeser opposed the nine City Charter propositions on the May ballot, including Proposition 7, which solidified the city's policy of extending benefits to gay and unmarried partners of city employees because, he said, it contained changes to employee classifications and other personnel issues he said he didn't agree with. The proposition was approved by voters.
This year's mayoral race saw one of the most aggressive campaign fundraising in history, as each candidate raised more than $300,000.
Ortega raised more than $343,000, while Leeser raised about $308,000 -- including nearly $90,000 from his own pocket.
