Mr Onesy Boutsivongsack, Deputy President of the Lao Garment Association, disclosed this week that the garment sector in Laos was recovering from the global economic crisis, clearly reflected in the hiring binge by garment factories across the country. He added that they had orders from EU countries. He also said that for 2009, the total export of garment from Laos would fall by just three per cent, giving a gross earning figure of US$ 180 million compared to US$ 189 million for 2008. With just a predicted small fall in gross earnings and so it follows that the World Bank economist in Vientiane made an error when he said that a percentage of the 40,000 fired workers would be garment workers. "We are welcoming three new foreign garment companies to Laos and this is another indication that this is a sunrise not a sunset industry and presently it is enjoying the economic recovery in the world," he said.
