LIMITED budget has been cited as a major challenge facing Zanzibar courts, hindering activities of the courts and thus delaying justice. Zanzibar Chief Justice, Omar Othman Makungu said that some of the courts' activities have since failed to be implemented due to insufficient budget. "We are failing to serve the citizenry properly due to meagre funds we are given, hence hindering our day to day activities," he said. According to Makungu, some cases have to be postponed indefinitely because of shortage of funds and thus denying the public their basic rights. Makungu made the remarks here yesterday before the Zanzibar President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein at the climax of Law Day which had the theme: 'Misuse of Social Media can be a source of breach of law and peace of the country.' Makungu urged the government to set aside enough funds that would help the country's courts to operate smoothly and work as quickly as possible on all pending cases.

Zanzibar Attorney General Judge Omar Othman Makungu, when contacted, said he would not comment on the lease agreement since he was not among the top brass in Karume's government.
However, a member of the House of Representatives who also sought anonymity said he would table his private motion in the House of Representatives to protest against the leasing decision.
