Biography: Dr. Om P. Malik
Dr. Om P. Malik Professor Om P. Malik has done pioneering work in the development of adaptive and artificial intelligence based controllers for application in electric power systems over the past thirty five years. After extensive testing in the laboratory and in actual power systems, these controllers are now employed on large generating units.e University of Waterloo high voltage laboratory. Professor Malik has also done extensive work in the area of power system protection, particularly digital and artificial intelligence based protection schemes. He has published over 700 papers including almost 350 papers in international Journals. Professor Malik graduated in 1952 from Delhi Polytechnic, India. After working for nine years in electric utilities in India, he returned to academia and obtained a Master's Degree from Roorkee University, India in 1962, a Ph.D. from London University and a DIC from the Imperial College, London in 1965. He was teaching and doing research in Canada from 1966 to 1997 and continues to do research as Professor Emeritus at the University of Calgary, Canada. Om Malik has been doing volunteer work for IEEE at the Section, Council, Region and IEEE corporate level for over 40 years. At present he is President-elect for IEEE Canada and Director-elect for IEEE Region 7 (Canada). He is also actively involved in the IEEE Power and Energy Society. He is now the Chair of Electric Machinery Committee and Vice-Chair of the Energy Development and Power Generation Committee of PES. Professor Malik is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, Canadian Academy of Engineering, Institution of Engineering and Technology, World Innovation Foundation and a Life Fellow of IEEE. He has received many awards from IEEE, EIC and APPEGA and the University of Calgary. He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta and Professional Engineers Ontario. Professor Malik is also actively involved in IFAC and was recently the Chair of the IFAC Technical Committee on Power Plants and Power Systems Control.

Over 80, including 43 Ph.D., students have completed their graduate studies under his supervision. He is an Associate Editor or on the Editorial Advisory Board of 7 international Journals and is listed in 13 Bibliographical Listings, such as Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, Men of Achievement, etc. At present he is Director, IEEE Region 7 and President, IEEE Canada. He is also actively involved in the IEEE Power and Energy Society and has also been actively involved with the International Federation of Automatic Control. Professor Malik is a Life Fellow of IEEE, and a Fellow of IET, the Engineering Institute of Canada, Canadian Academy of Engineering and World Innovation Foundation. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the Provinces of Alberta and Ontario, Canada.

In addition to chairing technical subcommittees, he is at present vice-chair of the Electric Machinery Committee. Professor Malik is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, Canadian Academy of Engineering, Institution of Electrical Engineers, World Innovation Foundation and a Life Fellow of IEEE. He has received many awards from IEEE, EIC and APPEGA and the University of Calgary. He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta and Professional Engineers Ontario.
