Harris speaks about faith during annual Freedom/Fund Scholarship Banquet

"It only matters what God says," Harris told the group about the decision to turn down a $300,000 a year job offer and start his own business.
He said he and his wife struggled at first to make ends meet when he started Harris & Ford LLC in 1994.
"God said do this, and when God says to do something, the first part of the period is a time of testing," Harris said. He was awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young/CNN/Nasdaq/Amex/USA Todayin 1999, and his company is a major supplier of ingredients to companies like Avon, Coca-Cola, Kraft and Procter & Gamble. He said prayer has been an important part of his life and believes he can see God responding to prayer.
Harris said when his son was young, he suffered from seizures, and Harris and his wife took their son to their church and began to pray. He said God spoke to him and said his son would only have one more seizure and it would be the worst. The next day his son had a severe seizure, and it's the last one he ever had - he is now 28.
"You see many people pray, but they don't take time to listen. God will answer you," he said. Harris and his wife now reside in Indianapolis, Harris serves as a pastor at Turning Point Family Worship Center which hosts TM Youth Camp in Zanesville each summer.

Being black in red, white and blue - [cached]

The pigmentation of the skin should never be looked at as a disadvantage, according to Pastor Obadiah Harris of Lifting Up Jesus Pentecostal Church.

"It is a gift from God," said Harris, who also serves as Safe and Drug-free coordinator for the Chillicothe City Schools."Especially when you look at the people who paved the way.We are the successors of our predecessors."
Harris said he always understood his color did not define his character, although as a native of Ross County he vividly remembers the difficulty his parents had when he was 10 years old and they were forced to buy a new house but couldn't because white homeowners did not want to sell to black families.
"I knew even then that being a black man defines my exterior, but it does not direct my priority," he said.
Toward such an end, Harris does not let his color dictate how he should act, think or speak in society. With an expansive vocabulary and a wealth of knowledge under his belt, he understands being black in America today is about living up to God's place for you in this world and no one else's.
