St. Louis, June 12, 2013 - Norman J. Nagel, DDS, MS, an orthodontist with offices in Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks, Calif., has been elected by the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists (PCSO) as its representative on the Board of Trustees of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). With more than 17,000 members, the AAO is the world's oldest and largest dental specialty organization. The PCSO is a constituent organization of the AAO and serves members practicing in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho (Twin Falls and Ketchum and all areas west within the state), Nevada, Oregon and Washington, the territorial possessions of the United States in the Pacific area, the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan, and the Yukon and Northwest Territories of Canada.
"I am deeply honored by the PCSO for entrusting me to represent the interests of our members and, importantly, the patients we serve, on the AAO Board of Trustees," Dr. Nagel said. "The AAO is at the forefront of issues that directly and indirectly affect orthodontists' ability to deliver the highest quality of care to our patients, including areas such as orthodontists' education, research, governmental relations, insurance and educating consumers about orthodontists' unique educational qualifications. A particular area that I expect to work on is the ability of the next generation of orthodontists to serve the needs of the public. As long as new orthodontists have the ability to choose the type of practice that will be best suited to meet the needs of their patients, it will help to assure the public's continued access to high quality, affordable orthodontic care."
Dr. Nagel attended Case Western Reserve University for his graduate and post-graduate education. He earned his DDS in 1967, and his MS and certificate in orthodontics in 1973.
From 1963 to 1994, Dr. Nagel served in the U.S. Navy/Naval Reserve. As a Navy Captain and facing Navy retirement, Dr. Nagel resigned his commission and was commissioned a Colonel in the U.S. Army National Guard. He retired from the Army in 2001.
Long active in organized dentistry and orthodontics, Dr. Nagel has served the profession for decades through work in local, state, regional and national organizations. Dr. Nagel is a past president of the California Association of Orthodontists (CAO) and the PCSO. He has been a PCSO Director (California Representative), served on the AAO Council on Orthodontic Health Care, and represented the PCSO at the AAO House of Delegates. Dr. Nagel served 16 years as an alternate delegate and delegate from California on the American Dental Association's (ADA) House of Delegates. He is a director and co-vice chairman of AAO Services, Inc., the for-profit subsidiary of the AAO. He a former chair of the AAO Council on Orthodontic Health Care, and currently is its insurance consultant.
Dr. Nagel has special expertise in insurance. He has given Webinars on insurance-related topics for the AAO. He represents the AAO on the Code Maintenance Committee at the ADA, and is the orthodontist on the Specialty Advisory Committee for CIGNA Health Care (dental).
Dr. Nagel maintains memberships in the AAO, PCSO, CAO, the World Federation of Orthodontists, the ADA, the California Dental Association, the Santa Barbara-Ventura County Dental Society, the Conejo Valley Academy of Dentistry, and the American Association of Dental Consultants. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
Service to his community has been a priority throughout Dr. Nagel's career. He is active in the Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce, Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce, and is currently a Commissioner and Chairman of the Area Housing Authority of Ventura County, CA. Dr. Nagel is a past president of both Ascension Lutheran Church of Thousand Oaks and the Ascension Lutheran Church Foundation. He is a member and Past President of the Thousand Oaks Rotary Club. He has assisted youth through service as Board member and Chairman of the YMCA of Southeast Ventura County, the Conejo Schools Foundation and Lutheran Youth Encounter (Minnesota). He has been active in adult education as a credentialed teacher in the Simi Valley Unified School District, and as a part-time faculty member at the UCLA School of Dentistry. He has given lectures at meetings of numerous professional organizations and service clubs such as Rotary, Kiwanis, Optimists and Soroptimists.
Dr. Nagel served two terms as an elected Trustee to the Ventura County Community College District (Ventura, Oxnard, and Moorpark Colleges), and chaired the Dental Hygiene Committee that began the dental hygiene program at Oxnard College over 15 years ago.
Dr. Nagel is a life member of many military organizations. Among them are the Reserve Officers Association, the American Military Surgeons of the U.S., and the Military Order of the World Wars, the National Guard Association of California and the National Guard Association of the U.S. Among his military honors are included the Meritorious Service Medal (2) Navy Commendation Medal (2) and Army Commendation Medal (1). Dr. Nagel is especially proud of his Alaska Community Service Medals (2) for service to the Native Americans in Alaska.
Over his long career, Dr. Nagel has been recognized for his service and contributions with a multitude of honors and awards. Most recently, he was selected as the David C. Fainer, M.D. Dentist of the Year (2011) for the Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation. In 2010, the PCSO presented him with its Annual Session award, and in 2008, the CAO presented him with its Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Nagel attended Case Western Reserve University for his graduate and post-graduate education. He earned his DDS in 1967, and his MS and certificate in orthodontics in 1973.
From 1963 to 1994, Dr. Nagel served in the U.S. Navy/Naval Reserve. As a Navy Captain and facing Navy retirement, Dr. Nagel resigned his commission and was commissioned a Colonel in the U.S. Army National Guard. He retired from the Army in 2001.
Long active in organized dentistry and orthodontics, Dr. Nagel has served the profession for decades through work in local, state, regional and national organizations. Dr. Nagel is a past president of the California Association of Orthodontists (CAO) and the PCSO. He has been a PCSO Director (California Representative), served on the AAO Council on Orthodontic Health Care, and represented the PCSO at the AAO House of Delegates. Dr. Nagel served 16 years as an alternate delegate and delegate from California on the American Dental Association's (ADA) House of Delegates. He is a director and co-vice chairman of AAO Services, Inc., the for-profit subsidiary of the AAO. He a former chair of the AAO Council on Orthodontic Health Care, and currently is its insurance consultant.
Dr. Nagel has special expertise in insurance. He has given Webinars on insurance-related topics for the AAO. He represents the AAO on the Code Maintenance Committee at the ADA, and is the orthodontist on the Specialty Advisory Committee for CIGNA Health Care (dental).
Dr. Nagel maintains memberships in the AAO, PCSO, CAO, the World Federation of Orthodontists, the ADA, the California Dental Association, the Santa Barbara-Ventura County Dental Society, the Conejo Valley Academy of Dentistry, and the American Association of Dental Consultants. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
Service to his community has been a priority throughout Dr. Nagel's career. He is active in the Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce, Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce, and is currently a Commissioner and Chairman of the Area Housing Authority of Ventura County, CA. Dr. Nagel is a past president of both Ascension Lutheran Church of Thousand Oaks and the Ascension Lutheran Church Foundation. He is a member and Past President of the Thousand Oaks Rotary Club. He has assisted youth through service as Board member and Chairman of the YMCA of Southeast Ventura County, the Conejo Schools Foundation and Lutheran Youth Encounter (Minnesota). He has been active in adult education as a credentialed teacher in the Simi Valley Unified School District, and as a part-time faculty member at the UCLA School of Dentistry. He has given lectures at meetings of numerous professional organizations and service clubs such as Rotary, Kiwanis, Optimists and Soroptimists.
Dr. Nagel served two terms as an elected Trustee to the Ventura County Community College District (Ventura, Oxnard, and Moorpark Colleges), and chaired the Dental Hygiene Committee that began the dental hygiene program at Oxnard College over 15 years ago.
Dr. Nagel is a life member of many military organizations. Among them are the Reserve Officers Association, the American Military Surgeons of the U.S., and the Military Order of the World Wars, the National Guard Association of California and the National Guard Association of the U.S. Among his military honors are included the Meritorious Service Medal (2) Navy Commendation Medal (2) and Army Commendation Medal (1). Dr. Nagel is especially proud of his Alaska Community Service Medals (2) for service to the Native Americans in Alaska.
Over his long career, Dr. Nagel has been recognized for his service and contributions with a multitude of honors and awards. Most recently, he was selected as the David C. Fainer, M.D. Dentist of the Year (2011) for the Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation. In 2010, the PCSO presented him with its Annual Session award, and in 2008, the CAO presented him with its Distinguished Service Award.
Dr. Nagel and his wife, Carol, reside in Camarillo, Calif.
