Norman Hermant, the ABC's social affairs correspondent, travelled all the way from Melbourne to Borroloola, a small, very remote and deprived town in the Northern Territory's Gulf country, with "just one mobile number in hand and a list of other 'less likely' numbers". He has written here about his assignment.
...
"There really is no choice," Hermant claimed, for most of the boys at Borroloola when ceremony time comes round.
Hermant reported that the NT Child Abuse Taskforce had received two notifications about the incident, but an investigation had not identified any wrongdoing.

Norman Hermant was just doing his job. And I love the fact that this time last year he was wearing 10 layers reporting from Moscow and now he's reporting from Borroloola.

Social affairs reporter Norman Hermant went to a remote Northern Territory community and confirmed that three young people had been airlifted to a Darwin hospital bleeding profusely after an initiation ritual in which circumcision had been inexpertly performed.
...
Norman spoke to others from Borroloola, both on and off the record. Several talked of their apprehensions. One elder told him that what occurred was not supposed to have occurred. Garrawa elders spoke openly and at no time was Norman told that it was off-limits to tell the story.
However Norman's report was made with care. Garrawan elders willingly gave interviews and talked at length about the day. Later one of them and Norman negotiated amicably to excise parts of an interview on the grounds that it was too detailed, culturally sensitive or revealed secret aspects of the ceremony.

Norman Hermant's ABC report on the other hand was sober, considered and very much in the public interest.

I don't think Norman Hermant's report was saying anything adverse about the rite itself - it emphasised that for Aboriginal young men it was an initiation into manhood and identity - surely some process can be put in place so that the rite can be performed with a sterile, sharp implement, with a local anaesthetic (although I'm sure the endurance of pain is part of the initiation rite, but perhaps on that issue we can move it into the 21st century), and by a trained person.

Given that Hermant failed to deal with the most significant aspect of this story; the withdrawal of medical care from Booroolola which required the teenagers to be airlifted to Darwin, I find the assertion that this was "good journalism" incredible.
