Norma has a Bachelor of Philosophy from Newcastle University and was a teacher for 30 years. She has experience in both primary and secondary schools with 14 years as a head teacher and four years as an educational advisor, and then consultant. She is a regular guest speaker at local and national conferences and training events.
In 1997 she was awarded the Prize for Public Leadership by the Office of Public Management. In 1998 she was chosen by the think-tank Demos to serve as an example of civic entrepreneurship. In 2000 she was elected as a founder member of the General Teaching Council for England.

On Tuesday 18th June 2013, Norma Redfearn, Elected Mayor for North Tyneside, Governors, College staff and 33 representatives from North East businesses helped celebrate the Launch of TyneMet College's Business Ambassador Programme.
Jon Vincent, Principal and Chief Executive, TyneMet College, welcomed the guests to the evening and his speech was followed by an introduction given by Norma Redfearn, Elected Mayor for North Tyneside and former Governor of TyneMet College.
