They'll add protein and fiber, plus they're rich in the amino acid tryptophan, says Nikki Ostrower of Nao Nutrition in New York City, just like turkey. Tryptophan stimulates production serotonin and melatonin, both of which can encourage a good night's sleep. Don't skimp on veggies. Leafy greens are not only fibrous, but they're magnesium rich, which helps calm you down, says Ostrower.

"Whatever you eat, don't eat too late," says Ostrower. Take your last bite at least a couple of hours before bedtime, she recommends.

"Your body knows how to break down food and use it efficiently," says Nikki Ostrower, a nutritionist at NAO Nutrition in New York City.

"It's got a ton of fiber and it's a complete protein with a healthy amount of all the essential amino acids," says Ostrower. "No wonder the Incas called it the grain of the gods. Technically, quinoa isn't a grain, but a seed in the same family as beets, spinach, and chard. The tiny seed provides heart-healthy fats, nutrients like folate, manganese, magnesium, iron, copper, phosphorus, and zinc. It actually has a stronger concentration of antioxidant phytonutrients than cranberries-publicized as a superfood-and it offers a wide-array of anti-inflammatory nutrients. "Some people do really well having it just once a day as a side, or as a porridge," says Ostrower.
That's gorgeous," says Ostrower.
"If you really want the king of greens, go for sea vegetables," says Ostrower. "A multi-seaweed salad or miso soup will pack the nutritional profile of different seaweeds into one punch. The varieties include wakame, arame, nori, dulse, and kombu: The combination will more than make up for a multivitamin, says Ostrower.

After working with Nikki for a couple weeks people started telling me I was glowing! The first most exterior noticeable improvement was my skin. Many people have commented on it - one person even asked me to write an article about it for their blog! Nikki is truly a miracle worker. When I started seeing Nikki I was drinking tons of coffee, felt bloated most of the time, and had no intuitive sense of what to eat and when. She listened to all of my health, food, and body issues - it felt like food therapy! Then she's helped me to change my habits and daily routines around food - GRADUALLY and it worked! The affect of her suggestions and explanations on my actual behavior is amazing. I often come to our meetings feeling hopeless and leave feeling motivated and inspired. It's truly amazing. She takes notes during our meetings so I can listen and emails them to me after with useful resources. She responds to my emails and texts with questions that come up between our sessions - like what to make for a dinner party or eat before a workout. She asks me to send her updates between meetings, too, which keeps her informed of what I am dealing with so our meetings are more honest and effective. We've been meeting for about six months and every time we talk an additional issue or question has come up that she helps me tremendously with. The progress I've made in working with her is awesome. I recommend her every opportunity I get. Megan, Instructor, New York, NY

Not only does Nikki care about whom she is working with, and I say with because she is so interactive and involved with her clients, she is also incredibly well versed and knowledgeable about her field. Her motto, "Perfectly Imperfect", allows freedom and trust to be a part of your experience. Nikki is remarkably supportive and seamlessly shifts the difficulties in your life pertaining to food and eating from painful and stagnant to enjoyable and flexible. She never ever passes judgment and always offers a wide variety of suggestions to help with negative patterns, struggles with eating disorders and provides a solution for everyday improvements. I believe Nikki has changed my life in ways I never thought were possible. After years of struggle and defeat I finally feel like I have the tools and support to live free of a long and depressing fight with anorexia, bulimia and an overall hatred of how I feel and how I look. Nikki has given me the gift of enjoying food and when I struggle she is right by my side giving me her love and encouragement. I am forever grateful for all she has done and look forward to continuing with her. Mage, New York, NY
Nikki's diet plan has changed my life! My quality of life has improved dramatically since I started on my dietary path with Nikki at NAO Nutrition. I am an opera singer and thrive on energy and presence. I was hopeless after being diagnosed with both celiac disease and ulcerative colitis and kept running into dead ends with nutritionists that were not fully aware of how limiting this diet can be and how to deal mentally with such a dramatic lifestyle change. I had given up on nutritionists when one, referred by my GI specialist, gave me a copy of the food pyramid from the 1950s with a picture of a loaf of bread at the foundation. By the time I found Nikki at NAO Nutrition I was horribly under weight, malnourished, depressed, and desperately searching for a way to take control of my life and diet.
Nikki opened my eyes to a new system of eating that did not overwhelm me, and with each day I felt more and more confident that I could do it on my own. Even though I am constantly traveling and live in another state, I always felt I could call her if I felt overwhelmed and she would be there with answers. Working with Nikki is the best choice I have made for myself and I am daily reaping the benefits in energy and happiness! Shannon, Texas
After careful analysis of my eating habits and lifestyle, Nikki crafted a nutrition plan that was right for me. For years, I have been trying to figure out what foods make me feel good and do not upset my stomach. Consulting with Nikki on my particular needs and issues has been wonderful. I am finally eating foods that agree with me and give me the energy I need throughout the day. I am grateful for Nikki's knowledge and for her genuine concern for my well-being. Susi, Licensed Massage Therapist, Connecticut
I have just started working with Nikki at NAO Nutrition and I have been pleasantly surprised on how knowledgeable and caring she is! Nikki has opened me to a new way of life and with her individual guidance I can't wait to continue to see the great results!! I highly recommend Nikki to anyone who is looking for a healthier outlook on life! Rob, Account Executive, NYC

She's like my own personal cheerleader! Not only have I lost weight, I now have tons of energy and my entire body feels healthy. Even my skin is clearer! I've struggled with food and health my whole life and now, I know I have the ability to change and the desire to do so. Working with Nikki was one of the best decisions I've ever made for myself...
