SLDF Founder Linda Speldewinde, British Council Director Tony Reilly and SLDF 2012 Chairman Nikhil Hirdaramani greeting global design leaders in London
"SAALF is a bringing together of the entire value chain in a manner that competing interests are addressed through dialogue and a true collaborative mindset to deliver value to the consumer," said SLDF chairman Nikhil Hirdaramani.
Sri Lanka is positioning itself as a hub for regional supply chains, and as well as the SAALF the new logistics forum, jointly hosted by SLDF
and Hellmann Worldwide Fashion, also aims to highlight the country's advantages.
"Sri Lanka enjoys a geographical advantage which puts us square in the middle of all major shipping routes between the East and the West, making us uniquely capable, as a regional hub, to both add value and shorten lead times," said Hirdaramani
With plans for this year's Sri Lanka Design Festival beginning to ramp up, event chairman Nikhil Hirdaramani says there are several ideas to make the November event the strongest yet, with a key focus on delivering actual solutions to real issues.
One of the central parts of SLDF
is the South Asian Apparel Leadership Forum, which debuted last year and aims to gather participants from all areas of the apparel industry to discuss challenges and opportunities for the region.
says that this year the forum will be even more focused.
"We want to come up with a clear set of objectives and action points at the end," he
"I think our region is becoming more important in apparel sourcing, as well as retail, especially after South East Asian cost hikes," said Hirdaramani
"We realised that sustainability is important but that it isn't everything, that the event didn't revolve around sustainability," said Hirdaramani
"There is an opportunity to commercialise arts and crafts in Sri Lanka - there's a lot that hasn't been commercialised yet," said Hirdaramani
, adding that it is a key focus at SLDF
