Norton, the Utah Symphony's longtime principal trumpeter, can play brassy fanfares that could wake the dead, if that's what a composer calls for.But he's better known for spinning out smooth, refined melodies of supreme sweetness - a much rarer gift. That's the type of playing Norton will do today in Camille Saint-Sa'ns' Septet. "It's a perfect piece for Nick," said Nova Chamber Music Series director Corbin Johnston, "in that the trumpet part is the lyric part.
...
Nick gets to play the beautiful, melodic stuff."
...
Along with Norton, pianist Heather Conner has a virtuoso piano role; a quintet of string players furnishes an orchestral background.
...
"Nick has a gorgeous, warm, beautiful lyric sound on the trumpet," he said, "a beautiful sense of legato, lyrical playing that is all too rare in trumpet players."
...
Norton, notoriously modest about his playing, says his well-known knack for nailing the many exposed orchestral solos that fall his way has more to do with perspiration than inspiration. "Trumpet is one of the most physical instruments, and if it's off a couple of percent, it's not good," he said."I try to practice smart, and a lot.Basically, there is sort of an embarrassment factor. You have to practice hard because you are so loud." In the moments when the solo trumpet must shine out over the orchestra, Norton isn't thinking of the things he drills on during practice sessions. "It helps if you can get into the music, let it take you a little bit and not concentrate too much on the technique," he said."I tell my students, 'Composers don't write stuff to make your life miserable - it's uplifting.' But it's hard, when it's such a difficult instrument, to remember that." Norton joined the Utah Symphony in 1980.

Performers are trumpeter Nick Norton, violinists Gerald Elias and Hasse Borup, violist Julie Edwards, cellist Meeka Quan-DiLorenzo, bassist Corbin Johnston and pianist Heather Conner.
