, is pleased to announce the appointment of Nick Lacanski
as music director of the Alabama Youth Symphony
.Nick Lacanski, conductor and violinist, brings a wealth of ideas and a passion for teaching the symphonic arts to this position.He will continue his duties as Chair of the Fine Arts Department at The Altamont School, including directing the Altamont Orchestra and Jazz Band, where he has served on the faculty for the past 11 years.Prior to joining The Altamont School, Nick was on the conducting staff of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and taught in the Birmingham City Schools.He
studied conducting with Gustav Meier, Seiji Ozawa, Gennady Rozhdestvensky and Leonard Bernstein at the Tanglewood Music Festival.Before relocating to Birmingham, Mr. Lacanski served as Music Director/Conductor and Business Manager for the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra and Conductor of the Berea College Orchestra, teaching at Berea College and Jessamine County Schools.With a Bachelor of Music from Meadowmont School of Music, he began his career in Indianapolis as first violinist in the Arriaga String Quartet (in residence at Indianapolis Art Museum), Concertmaster and Assistant Conductor of the Indianapolis Opera Company, Music Director/Conductor for Opera de Lafayette, Assistant Conductor for the Greater Indianapolis Youth Orchestra, Concertmaster of the Sinfonia de Camera, and composer, arranger, musician for the Oakwood Recording Studio.
