Nicholas Signorelli Sr.Business ManagerInternational Union of Operating EngineersAcknowledging that some contractors have expressed some apprehension that a union worker shortage might be in the offing in 2007 due to the heavy work on tap, Mr. Signorelli said, "Everybody is concerned about that. While saying he'd sign a contract anytime for the amount of work the trades have had this year, Mr. Signorelli said that 2007 will be even better. The Local is up 65,000 man-hours so far this year as compared to 2005.With work beginning on the I-287 project and the NYCDEP's Ultraviolet Disinfection plant and major repairs to the Tappan Zee Bridge expected to begin in April, Mr. Signorelli said Local No. 137 could be at full employment and would then possibly require the services of the 25 engineers from the Local's Training School next spring."I anticipate a good year next year, better than this year," he predicted.Mr. Signorelli said that the AFL-CIO and the International Union of Operating Engineers will support Democrats "across the board" in the upcoming election. He criticized the Bush Administration for its promotion of anti-union, contractor policies and legislation and charged it with "union busting."On the statewide level, Mr. Signorelli said that the union would be supporting Eliot Spitzer for governor."This (Bush) Administration is the worst of any I have ever seen," Mr. Signorelli added. In terms of training, members of Local No. 137 are being sent down to the International Union of Operating Engineers training facility in Beckley, W. VA. to be certified.Local 137 officials are also traveling to that facility to learn about new HAZMAT policies in order to educate its members at the Local's facility in Montrose, NY.Mr. Signorelli said that the discord in Washington has not impacted the local construction trades due to the fact that the unions in the region have agreed to cooperate with one another. He said he was a bit frustrated with the unions that have left the AFL-CIO and hoped that one day the dissidents would return to the fold.Mr. Signorelli said that the strengths of Westchester's union trades are its qualified workers and the quality of the contractors that employ them.He noted that in surrounding markets of New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut, non-union contractors are securing "millions and millions of dollars worth of work."
