Nelson Lee Sheppard, 59 of 6407 River Road, died Sunday June 9, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Sheppard was born July 14, 1942 in Beaufort County and is the son of Vonnie Woolard and the late John B. Sheppard.
Nelson began his career with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Department on April 15, 1966.He worked his way through the ranks as Deputy, Deputy Criminal Investigator, Chief of Criminal Iinvestigation and Chief Deputy.On April 7, 1981 he was sworn in as sheriff of Beaufort County, to fill the unexpired term of Sheriff O. E. "Red" Davis.In 1982, he was elected to his first term as Sheriff and served three consecutive terms as Sheriff of Beaufort County for seventeen years, until his retirement in December of 1998.Shortly after his retirement he took the post of magistrate.
The family suggests that memorials contributions be directed to the First Baptist Church 113 North Harvey Street Washington, N. C. 27889 or the charity of one's choice.
