unique self-defense method.
The 1 p.m. session is for women and girls ages 12 and up.
SHIELD, according to Nio
, is a mixture of martial arts, self-defense and street fighting skills.
I was born and raised in Indonesia and we were exposed to a lot of violence and street fighting, said Nio
, 44, who lives in Marina del Rey.
has immersed himself in martial arts and self-defense training since childhood, and his
motivation to teach others grew in part from an incident involving a friend who was sexually assaulted in 2003.
asked him to show her
some self-defense moves, he
began teaching her
how to fight back against a much bigger opponent.
has since shared his
self-defense knowledge by volunteering at various organizations, womens shelters and private groups.
He has become an advocate for ending violence against women and has taught self defense to more than 10,000 women and girls at high schools, universities, Fortune 500 companies, private groups and government organizations.

Then it became twice and week and finally I just got too busy, so I quit my job in commercial real estate.
