"Broward County came up with this program following reports from media outlets that senior year is a `wasteland.' And at the College Academy
, we forbid using the word `senioritis' because no student is ever a senior," Sapp
said."They're a senior and a sophomore in college concurrently."
cautions that the program isn't for everyone, and especially not for students who are interested in attending prom, graduation or playing sports.
Students who apply for the program must turn in their applications by March 1 and are encouraged to complete the essay portion of the application form because the essay works as a tiebreaker among the more than 700 applications the program receives each year, Sapp
