‘I don't believe in retirement,' Port says

Name: Neil Port
After graduating from Altoona High School, Neil Port was off to Penn State University to study industrial engineering.
But along the way, Port discovered that he would rather be a businessman.
He started two businesses while in college. He and family members also led one of the most recognized food distribution companies in the country, founded a computer company and created an executive coaching company.
Port found plenty of time to devote to community service and to enjoy one of his passions: music.
Port, 68, of Altoona has no plans to slow down.
"I don't believe in retirement.I believe in chapters," Port said.
It was so lucrative I kept it running for about 10 years after I left Penn State," Port said."This business set the stage for my life."
Port, who also developed an advertising business while in college, learned an important lesson from his ventures.
"If you take care of your customers and give them what they want on time and are responsive to their needs, they will keep coming back," Port said.
After college, Port worked as a route salesman for Sky Brothers Inc., a food distribution company founded by his uncles Israel and Moses Sky.
"We increased sales from $5 million in annual sales in 1961 to $200 million when we sold the company in 1986," Port said."We became one of the most recognized food service distributors in the country."
In 1968, while controller at Sky, Port created Delta Computer Systems Inc., now known as Delta Health Technologies.
Delta became one of the most prominent companies in the world providing the software needs for the home health care industry.
Port said his partners and employees deserve the credit for the companies' success.
"We became national leaders because we had a great work force. We allowed them to do what they did best," Port said."The typical employer puts barriers in his employees way.We tried to remove the barriers that keep them from obtaining greatness. We let them be what they can be within the business environment."
In 2001, Port created Neil Port and Associates LLC, an executive coaching company in which he mentors chief executive officers of various companies.
Port has been involved in the community throughout his career, serving on numerous boards â€" something he learned from his father, Samuel.
"He was a very community-spirited guy," Port said."I would hope I would be known as a good guy who helped out a lot in our area.I like to say ‘yes' to problems and find a way to solve problems.I am someone who cares about people and works to help people in the area."
From his days at Roosevelt Junior High School, Port has had an interest in music.
He played in bands with Paul Winter, who became a Grammy Award-winning musician and was a member of the Blue Band at Penn State.
In the mid-1990s, Port said he accidentally became involved with community theater.
"I was playing the piano for my daughter Sue who was auditioning for ‘Guys and Dolls.' I decided to audition and I got a part.We ended up in ‘Guys and Dolls' together," Port said.
Port met Will Jones in 2005 while Jones was working on a production of "The Music Man" at Cresson Lake Playhouse.
Port learned Jones had written several plays and the two formed P&J Productions in 2006.
"The purpose is to promote Will Jones plays," Port said.
Jones calls Port "one of the most interesting people he has ever met."
Port and Jones played key roles in the recent production of "The Music Man," and Port is serving as producer for "Ghosts," which will be performed Oct. 26 to 28 at Roosevelt Junior High School.

Working with Jones has been important to Port, who once considered music as a career.
Port admits he didn't expect to be acting.
"I never believed I would an on-stage guy.I always considered myself a musician rather than a performing actor," Port said.
