Neal Dudovitz - Executive Director at NLSLA Executive Director
For more than 40 years, Neal Dudovitz has been dedicated to providing meaningful access to justice to our nation's poor. Neal is an accomplished advocate and a visionary leader. Throughout his distinguished career, his commitment to legal services has remained the same: to provide effective individual representation connected to high-impact policy advocacy. That philosophy has been at the core of Neal's leadership of Neighborhood Legal Services, where, since taking the helm as executive director in 1993, he has worked to develop innovative approaches to address the needs of Los Angeles' diverse communities.
Neal began his career at Legal Services of Eastern Michigan, where he specialized in health?and mental health law. He later joined the National Senior Citizens Law Center, serving as a?staff attorney before taking on the role of deputy director. While there, he administered and supervised the Los Angeles office and was lead counsel and co-counsel for a wide variety of significant federal district and appellate court cases. In the 1980s, his nationally-focused litigation with the Center also twice brought him to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he argued as lead attorney.
At NLSLA, Neal oversees all aspects of the organization's $14 million annual budget-which has increased five-fold since he became executive director-including program administration, financial operations, fundraising, board relations and program policy. Under Neal's direction, NLSLA became a multi-office agency serving the full breadth of Los Angeles County. Through his leadership, NLSLA has developed several innovative, nationally-recognized signature programs, including the nation's largest network of Self-Help Legal Access Centers, the Health Consumer Center, and a growing network of Medical Legal Community Partnerships.
Neal's career has been highlighted by numerous appointments and awards. He served as a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging and was a member of the Lawyer's Advisory for the Legal Aid Association of California. Neal has also received a Section Achievement Award from the State Bar of California Legal Services and was named one of the San Fernando Valley Business Journal's Top 25 Lawyers.
