It is still seven months until the season tips off but Nathan has already begun to get to know his players. Nathan has been the assistant coach and freshman coach at White County High School in Sparta for five years working with another former Bobcat player and coach, Eric Mitchell.
This past season Nathan was assistant girls' coach. While at White County Nathan also coached the 6th grade boys' team for four years and served as 8th grade boys' coach for one year. He also coached two travel teams for two years. Nathan began his Bobcat career in 8th grade when he was called up by then Bobcat Coach Eric Mitchell. During his Junior and Senior year he was coached by Brent Smith, who now coaches the Lady Bobcats, and was named as a Mr. Basketball finalist in his senior year. As a Bobcat he played in the state tournament three straight years, established a new school record for most points in a game, 58, in a 104-60 win over Livingston Academy, scored a career 3003 points, which also is a record, and graduated as class valedictorian. Nathan received a scholarship from Freed-Hardeman University where he also set several records. He is a member of the 1000 Point Club, holds the record for three point goals at 109 in a season, three point attempts in a season, and three point goals made for a career at 314. He also holds the three point goals made percentage career record with 41.7% Nathan said the team will attend play days this summer at White County, will hold some at Pickett County High School and will attend others yet to be determined. Asked about how he feels about returning to Pickett County Nathan stated, "I am very excited and honored to be the new basketball coach at Pickett County. There is so much tradition in the program, and I am hoping to continue that tradition and set a positive example for the young men on the team. I have many lasting memories from my days at PCHS like playing in front of our home crowd and representing the school in the state tournament. I am looking forward to coming back home and coaching at a place where I have spent countless hours playing the game of basketball." White County High School principal Grant Swallows, a former Livingston Academy football and basketball player who later played football at Tennessee Tech, said, "I am so excited for Nathan.
As for the 2014-15 season, Nathan said, "I believe there is a great combination of experienced and young talent, and I believe that we will be very competitive during the upcoming season." With Nathan's experience starting his varsity play in the 8th grade, he will have an excellent understanding of what is needed to bring this exceptionally talented current group of 8th graders along when they join the experienced varsity members this upcoming season. With his having played on teams which made the state tournament several times, he also knows just what it takes to return the program to that level of play.
