Natalie Schaefer is the Executive Director for Strategic Development Initiatives at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
Her duties include campus-wide diversity initiatives and strategic corporate partnerships. Prior to this role, Natalie was the Assistant Dean for External Relations in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design managing fundraising, marketing and communications, special events and alumni relations for the college. Natalie joined Cal Poly as the director of Corporate and Foundation Partnerships in 2013, facilitating the creation and advancement of these relationships to further the educational mission of the university. Natalie has been in fundraising for over 20 years, helping to raise millions for Paso RoblesPublic Schools to fund three high school career technical education facilities, and hundreds of thousands for school district programs around the state. She's directed two San Luis Obispo county nonprofits - the Paso Robles Children's Museum and the American Red Cross - developing programs and conducting outreach to support the mission of these important organizations. She also worked for Pacific Gas and Electric Company in corporate philanthropy, facilitating grant making and employee engagement. Natalie spent a number of years in K-12 education - first as a science teacher, then in district administration running programs on career education, service learning and environmental education. Early in her career, she served as an interpretive park ranger in Lassen County and with the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District. Natalie has earned both an appraiser's license and a broker's license, and continues to manage her family's real estate investments. She has a master's degree in Environmental Sciences, and undergraduate degrees in Geography and American Indian Studies. She is currently working on an Ed.D. in Education/Learning Analytics. Her passion for ethnobotany (the study of the use of plants for medicinal purposes) led to research and writing Redwood Medicinals, an illustrated field guide. She also published an audio-tour of the journey between Del Norte County and Oregon Caves National Park. Her favorite pastime is to travel the world with her husband and son, studying the cultural and natural history of the countries they visit.

She was also an informal educator, serving as the seasonal interpretive ranger in Lassen County for the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District. While working for the district, she earned her master's degree in environmental sciences, which included a habitat restoration project that engaged nearly 400 children in gathering, propagating and planting native plants in Carmel Valley, Calif. Schaefer also earned an appraiser's license and a broker's license, and continues to manage her family's real estate investments.
