Prominent dairying couple Geoff and Natalie Akers have received offers of support from friends and colleagues following a fire that burnt out their Tallygaroopna brick home last week.
The fire broke out in an air conditioner on Thursday about 4 pm, while Mr and Mrs Akers and their 18-month-old son Lloyd were out of the house. They are living with Mr Akers' brother and father while they wait for an assessment of the damage. Mr Akers is a director of NVIRP and regularly shows Jersey cattle, while Mrs Akers is a former chief executive of Murray Dairy and has been active in the UDV and VFF. Mr Akers said he had left the Victoria Rd house to attend to irrigation at the same time his wife and son, Lloyd, left for shopping in Shepparton. He noticed a truck slowing along the nearby road and then saw smoke. He arrived back at the house to find the fire had a strong hold in the roof through the air conditioning system. ''I rang triple zero, but there was already smoke coming out of the eves,'' Mr Akers said. The roof collapsed and there is fire damage to all rooms. Mr Akers said they had managed to recover their wedding album and jewellery and some other personal effects, but would lose all their furniture. Mrs Akers was shattered to arrive and find the damage after being called home by friends. Mr Akers thanked the four fire brigades that attended and extinguished the blaze.
