Horribly sad news out of India: Narendra Dabholkar, the founder and president of Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti (Committee for Eradication of Superstition of Maharashtra), was shot dead this morning by two unidentified men on a motorcycle.

Dabholkar was one of the leading advocates of an anti-superstition bill that was gaining momentum amongst progressives in Maharashtra.
...
Dabholkar was an associate of Sanal Edamaruku, the Indian rationalist who fled India under threat of arrest for blasphemy against the Catholic Church and who was the subject of many death threats, himself.
Police are investigating the murder but haven't yet named any suspects or the motive.
This is a truly horrific blow to the otherwise strong rationalist community of India. While it could be the catalyst for a groundswell of support for the anti-superstition legislation, it will surely discourage other rationalists from stepping into the spotlight and agitating for real change in the way that Dabholkar did.

The Humanist community in India is shattered by the news of Narendra Dabholkar's murder.

The murder of Narendra Dabholkar, death-threats to those who expose "miracles", delayed action against godmen... is the Indian dream turning into a nightmare?

...
On Monday night Dr Narendra Dabholkar, a man in his late sixties, took an evening train from Mumbai to Pune. He arrived after midnight, but still got up early the next morning to go for a walk in the Sambhaji Garden. Shortly after 7am two men, who had parked their Honda motorbikes by a Hindu temple, walked up to Dr Dabholkar and shot him four times in the head and body. By the time the police arrived he was dying.

My friend and colleague Narendra Dabholkar was murdered for standing up to superstition. Let us hope his death inspires Indians to continue his fight for rationalism, says Sanal Edamaruku
Narendra Dabholkar's death has finally focused public attention on the role of the rationalist fight for India. It is a tragedy that the death of one of the country's finest rationalists was needed to bring about this sea change. But as I knew him, I can imagine that he would smile.

With Narendra Dabholkar, India has lost one of its finest rationalist leaders, I have lost a friend and a brother-in-arms, who has been a pillar of the movement in Maharashtra. His brutal murder made visible an explosive conflict seething under the surface of public attention. I think at least after the rationalist's death people should open their eyes. Dabholkar was murdered because he stood up against superstition. But his enemies have not been common believers trying to defend their faith. On the contrary, the rationalist movement is enjoying great acceptance. Dabholkar was loved by the people and this is best reflected in the spontaneous outpouring of grief and anger in Maharashtra.

Kottayam: "The murder of anti-superstition activist, Dabholkar, is an affront to the civilized world, and shockingly no religious leader has till now denounced it," according to Sanal Edamaruku, close associate of Dabholkar.
