Nancy Teskey, who chairs the Music Department at OES, said that singing or playing an instrument causes a vast number of neurons to fire in the brain.
Creating music develops integration among brain functions because it involves listening, mathematical rhythm, processing information, and moving the mouth or fingers. Also it involves emotions, which Teskey said is very important. "You can't just feed your brain and your body, you need to feed your soul," she said.
