Nancy Teskey, who chairs the Music Department at OES, said that singing or playing an instrument causes a vast number of neurons to fire in the brain.
Creating music develops integration among brain functions because it involves listening, mathematical rhythm, processing information, and moving the mouth or fingers. Also it involves emotions, which Teskey said is very important. "You can't just feed your brain and your body, you need to feed your soul," she said.

Performed by Nancy Teskey , flutePerformed by Nancy Teskey , flute ; John Hubbard , Cello ; and Carol Biel , PianoNancy TeskeyNancy Teskey performing Sound Cylinders at the NWEAMO festivalThe tape part in Sound Cylinders consists mainly of flute sounds that have been altered or modified with the help of a computer.This not only provides a way for the spectral qualities of the flute to be extended in the tape part , but also allows for a singularity in the overall timbral character of the work.The flute part utilizes several extended techniques ( such as tongue rams ).Nancy Teskey , Carol Biel , and John Hubbard performing Crumb's Voice of the Whale at the NWEAMO festivalNancy Teskey is Flute Instructor and Assistant Orchestra Conductor at Lewis and Clark College.She performs frequently with the Oregon Repertory Singers and the Portland Symphonic Choir.She has also taught at Metropolitan State College in Denver.Nancy has performed with the National Repertory Orchestra , Westminster Orchestra of Denver and the Centennial Philharmonic Orchestra of Denver.She has performed throughout the United States and at the National Flute Association Convention in Atlanta in 1999.She earned her DMA in Flute Performance and Pedagogy form the University of Colorado , her MM from the University of Texas and her BM from the University of New Mexico.She maintains a private teaching studio and freelances in the Portland area.Cellist , John Hubbard is a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts and the University of Southern California , where he studied with Ronald Leonard , Eleanore Schoenfeld and Gabor Rejto.After college , he pursued a free-lance career in the Los Angeles area where he performed with many local orchestras including the Pasadena Symphony , the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.He also recorded film and television scores and was an active private cello instructor.Upon moving to Oregon , he began performing with the Oregon Symphony , the Portland Opera , the Oregon Ballet Theatre and the Oregon Bach Festival.He is currently an adjunct instructor at Lewis & Clark and Reed Colleges and teaches and conducts at the Community Music Center.
