The program started three years ago when Nancy McDowell of the Liberty Center Association of the Arts realized that many children were not able to attend summer camp because of the tuition.Ms. McDowell's solution was to create a tuition-free camp for all kids."This is basically for children who don't usually have the opportunity to participate and to benefit from the arts," said Ms. McDowell, coordinator of An Arts Adventure."All the places have been good," said Ms. McDowell.

The site is the upstairs gallery at Liberty Center, 111 W. Fifth St. Retired local educator Elaine Ray, a 1962 graduate of the all-black Hubbard High School, assembled the display at the request of Nancy McDowell."I just felt we needed it," said Mrs. McDowell, executive director of the Liberty Center Association for the Arts.The month-long exhibit is in conjunction with another project that Ms. McDowell instigated -- a black history show featuring readings, recitations, reenactments and musical and dramatic skits.
