MYRON HENRY (Mathematics), University of Southern

It is an indicator people are making necessary adjustments to go on with life," said former USM Faculty Senate President Myron Henry."This August will be two years.People are realizing they will need an education, and it is time to reinvest in higher education," Henry said. However, "the challenges are still very great," for people still trying to rebuild their homes and recover financially, he added.

While researching a story on Kent State United for the Gulf Coast, a volunteer effort by the Kent State University community to help rebuild a region still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, I had the chance to speak at length with Dr. Myron Henry, former KSU provost and now math professor at the University of Southern Mississippi. Things were completely swept away from Biloxi to Bay St. Louis to Pass Christian," Henry said. What the media reports about New Orleans also is true, he said."Hundreds upon hundreds, probably thousands of houses flooded, damaged and not being torn down," he said. Fortunately, things are moving along, and the first few new houses recently were completed in New Orleans' Ninth Ward, which was hit hard by Katrina.Henry said Gulf Coast residents are grateful to their northern neighbors for the help they have received, and continue to receive. "Having lived in Northeast Ohio and having served at Kent State, it's special to have Kent State's name associated with help and recovery in Southern Mississippi," he said.
